Buy Clean Renewable Energy

Did you know that you control the source of that tiny portion of Connecticut’s electricity that you buy? You can stay with the basic fuel mix (15% renewable in 2011) or increase the amount of clean energy by selecting up to 100% clean and renewable.  Clean and renewable includes wind power, small hydro and other sources that replenish themselves and don’t pollute.

Even if you buy clean energy, a wind turbine will not appear suddenly in your backyard. It means that you are adding to the percentage of renewables purchased by the utility.  As more and more people do that, clean energy technologies will scale up and evolve while costs go down.

Clean energy is a little more expensive, but you can make the change at a very small or at no overall extra cost. This can be done by switching to an electrical supplier with lower rates than CL&P or UI. Your savings can cover all or most of the cost of clean energy.

There are two basic ways to move to clean energy in Connecticut:

1. Sign Up for CTCleanEnergyOptions
Optional: Select a less expensive energy supplier from the approved list
*  Sign up with CTCleanEnergyOptions and choose one of the two companies – Community Energy or Sterling Planet – that purchase renewable energy credits equal to the amount that you consume
*  Choose 50% or 100% clean and renewable

OR

2. Choose a Supplier/Product That Offers a Higher Percentage of Renewables
*  The list of suppliers’ products specifies the fuel mix (% renewables) in each one.  Several products are 100% renewable.
*  Sign up for one of the high renewables products to choose clean energy.
Select 100% clean and renewable energy if you can!

All of the information you need is on the Connecticut Energy Information (http://ctenergyinfo NULL.com/display_rates NULL.htm) website or is linked from that site. Billing is still handled by CL&P or UI.
